Bits and Bobs

We went to Spain last weekend on an important errand: Alex renewed his 30 year old drivers license so that he can exchange it for the UK one and avoid the drivers tests here. It was a whirlwind weekend, as a matter of fact it was so windy and rainy on Saturday we stayed home the entire day and were forced to eat lots of ham and delicious snacks.

Eric turned 15 and had a donut cake to celebrate.

I made a friend! yippee! Today we are heading out on a day trip to Cambridge and she has invited us over for Thanksgiving too,  I'm pretty happy about that.  I thought we might skip the holiday all together because (drumroll........) I got a job! I got a job and I'll be working next Thursday and won't be able to cook the turkey.

Yes, I got a job and I'm ecstatic about it. I'm working part time in a sewing and alterations shop in downtown Bury about a 10 minute walk from my house, I started this week and so far I really enjoy it. Sylvia the owner is so nice and talented and the working environment is fun and relaxed. I had such a good time chatting about sewing and crafting and just being with the ladies who love to sew and oh, getting some work done too.

We are spending the weekend in Woodbridge doing boaty things, but Sylvia told me about a fabric shop nearby so now that has been added to the weekend list of to-dos. Yes, things are looking up!

  1. Hi Karen! My name is Marisa and I just want to say hello - I popped over from Ariana's blog after seeing you in the comments and you had me at ensaimada!! I was in Mallorca last fall (my first visit anywhere in Spain) and I fell madly in love with these lovely pastries. Heavenly :) I'll continue to follow along as I'm a life-long Anglophile. My dream is to live there one day so I really enjoy reading expatriate blogs. So pleased to have discovered yours! And Happy Thanksgiving :) PS I'm also a little obsessed with grits!

  2. Hi Marisa, thanks for chiming in! You are obsessed with grits??? Are you from the south? Are you a butter with salt and pepper girl or butter with brown sugar type person?
And yes, ensaimadas are heavenly! We can't get enough of them when we visit my husbands family. His grandmother was from Mallorca and when she would visit family on the island she would come back with a suitcase full of sausages and ensaimadas!
Best of luck making your dream come true moving to England, it is hard work but definitely worth it, keep in touch!

  3. Karen, it is funny - I lived in Charleston, SC for 7 years and I never really got into grits. But since moving back to the Pacific NW I seriously can not get enough grits!!! I prefer them savory (actually, I confess I've never tried them sweet.) I like them with butter and salt and pepper and I also enjoy a good grits casserole - made one this week in fact! They have truly become a comfort food to me :) That is very cool your husband's grandma was from Mallorca - such a beautiful place. We were staying on the east side in Capdepera. Really lovely setting! Do you know where she was from in Mallorca?

    1. Haha - thank you for bringing us together Ariana!! I love it. I started following Kris' blog, then she led me to Sarah, then Sarah led me to you, now you've led me to Karen . . . . It's like listening to a beautiful progression of chords on a piano . . .

  5. I know, isn't the internet an amazing place??
Marisa, I'm not sure what part of Mallorca YaYa was from, she was very proud of her heritage though! Yum, cheese grits, the thought is making me a bit homesick!

    1. Karen, are you able to get any grits in the UK? Can you get some polenta and use it as a stand in? I hate to think of you going without grits! You must be from the south - which part?

    2. I grew up in Georgia, pretty much the home of grits. I haven't found any over here in the shops and don't think I ever will, I'll just have to get my fill when I am stateside! My Mom and Dad are coming over for Christmas and my youngest son has requested that they bring Pepperidge Farm goldfish!
